It started with something simple: a shared folder my Windows machine and my Mac could both reach, instead of shuffling files between them by hand with an external hard drive, inconvenient enough over time, that I went looking for a better way. That one NAS folder opened a door into self-hosted software, and I never really came back out.

The rack runs on an HP EliteDesk 800G5 mini PC with 32GB of RAM, 2.5G custom Network card and an unmanaged switch, wired into a 3D-printed rack case: an open design I found and adapted, swapping in other printable parts until it fit what I actually needed. A JetKVM sits on top for headless remote management; BIOS access and reboots from anywhere, no monitor or keyboard needed on-site.

Virtualized on Proxmox: TrueNAS SCALE runs the containerized stack on ZFS storage, media streaming and automation, photo backup, personal finance, network tooling, while Hermes handles agentic workflows.

Most of what I know about networking and sysadmin work, I picked up here, one broken config at a time.
